i posted these lyrics because i love this song. everything about it, with the exception of jay-z's verse, is incredible. and really, i love singing along. i mean, the bitch is bad. but i do have significant moral issues with the lyrical content. which is why i really don't like jay-z's verse. i didn't even include it here because he opens with "don't they know i'm trying to sex you continuously" which i suppose, kim probably wouldn't have a problem with in the context of the song. still, it kinda disgusts me. i'm so ambivalent about how i feel about rap lyrics that's it's difficult for me to write about it. i guess i really don't know enough about how all these women (foxy, kim, da brat etc) started their careers to make accurate claims. but i know no one was being forced to sing these songs, regardless of who wrote the lyrics. let's just say i have a problem with kim saying she'll take it in the butt and her pussy's greased up, yet one of my favorite lines is "tell me what's on your mind when your tongue's in the pussy?" i am going to return to this topic one day soon. i can feel all these different parts of herself (myself?) coming out in this song and i think my problems with it are that the typical listener isn't going to see those other selves. but only the one, the sexually available, sexually driven woman, who doesn't have a lot of other thougths in her head. but maybe i'm not giving enough credit. it just reminds me of this anais nin erotica story called "the queen" from a short story collection called "little birds". in the queen, the queen of all whores is described as "a womb turned inside out", her "whole body guided by eroticism". "the women who are unabashedly sexual, with the womb written all over their faces, who arouse in a man the desire to fling his penis at them immediately; the women for whom clothes are only a means of making certain fragments of the body more prominent" -- all of this to me describes kim in this song. and obviously, these quotes, although written by a woman, describe the man and his preceptions more than the woman. and it's disgusting to me, even though it was written to arouse and indeed it is arousing to read. but i just think lyrics like this and the way kim presents herself some of the time, it allows men to view women as wombs turned inside out and have that not only be ok, but be natural, accepted even by both sexes. i don't accept it. but i can't/won't stop listening to, singing along with or reading things like this. i have to balance what the song means to me with what i think it probably means to the rest of the world.

whenever i listen to jimi, i miss him terribly. i often wish i was alive in the 60s/70s so i could have had the experience of hearing about, seeking out, attending concerts, and enjoying in myriad ways bands like the jimi hendrix experience and parliament/funkadelic. but when i listen i feel such intense emotions, like the swirling airs of the moment the music was recorded infect me and i feel such hope and pleasure for the future, even for the present moment. i think if i had heard those records the year they were made, and then i grew older, i grew up and i realized that things definitely changed but not so much for the better...i think i'd be crushed and i might not even be able to feel the same way about the music. whereas, listening today, having a historical hindsight although not a memory of jimi's era, i can feel how i feel and even make up my own little imaginings about living a 60s/70s life without truly having to deal with his death. or, in the case of parliament, i can listen to a song about the vietnam war but i can, and of course i very much am, separated from it. still, i wish i could experience the music in it's specific historical moment. but i wish that about so many different things.

i posted the richie rich song because the first version of reason for rhyme uses the richie rich beat and it makes the song so different from not only it's original version, but the second chopped/screwed version as well. you can enjoy both songs on totally different levels. another thing i love about dj screw's mixes. for a particularly great song, he will use it mulitple ways so you can really just trip out on them both and experience all their facets. like when he rewinds a certain lyric and plays it again and again and then just chops it up so the words are barely distinguishable. this happens on the second version. i like the first one a lot though because it lends this slow and sad character to the song once you've come from listening to the richie rich track, they follow each other on the screw mix. you can really focus on the lyrics in this one although the bumping beats and climax of the song are muted because of the richie rich beat. but that's where the second version is really epic because dj screw takes that climax to a whole nother level and it's so fucking amazing. he really goes wild on the turntables and picks out the craziest rhymes to play over and over again. i love when you can tell that dj screw had a lot of fun screwing the song and how much he just enjoys the song for itself. just the way he treats the best parts of this song can inform you about that i think. he makes you feel it just like it should be felt, in the club, all those bass vibrations, rhymes giving you goosebumps. try it out.

a quote from angela carter's book nights at the circus. reading her always makes me want to write, words come into my head, descriptions of things that wouldn't have been phrased just so if i had not just come out of one of her chapters. so far i have read all her short stories, wise children, the infernal desire machines of dr hoffman, several perceptions and nights at the circus. her characters are the most memorable of any book i've read, no one is a footnote to the story. everyone is imbued with all manner of colorful descriptions of their characteristics and the most insane and odd, beautiful, tremendous things happen over the course of the books/stories. things that although they occur in the realm of the real world, the happenings are distinctly other-worldly, they leave the characters and you wondering where the line between real and unreal is within the story and the world. their world, your world. i always find hoards of words within her writing that i have never seen before and don't know the meaning of. her descriptions of a scene are so thick, she really puts a room and a character together for you to imagine quite easily. beautiful, wonderful reading. probably my favorite author to date.

i finally get around to the whole reason i created this goddamn thing. to share the beauty of betty.
let us think the lord our god for the fine arts library. and kvrx. and the revrend get down aka thomas fawcett. his review of the light in the attic reissue of betty's first 2 records was amazing and i don't remember why but i chose to put on the first track of 'they say i'm different' called shoo-b-doop and cop him. honestly i can't remember how i felt when i heard it, certainly my love of the song has only increased since that first listen. but i definitely felt something because i immediately burned the cd and never stopped listening to it. however, this is not that record. this is a vinyl rip of betty's 1975 release 'nasty gal', the quality of the record and the rip is a little dodgy, but i think it's very listenable. and although nowhere near as good, in my opinion, as her previous releases, there are some insane tracks on here. there is sadly very little info about betty online or any place but trust me (or listen for yourself!) she's incredible. i wish i could say more but you should just listen (this is the heaviest funk you're likely to hear) and i'll post some links and things once i have ripped her other records.

there's really only one problem with riding my bike around all the time instead of driving my car. that crucial window of time between chilling at home getting ready to go out and arriving at my destination is now filled only with the sounds of wind and my own curses at various driving/walking idiots and my random and unquietable thoughts. that window is especially important when you're kinda fucked up and going somewhere to get more fucked up...it's so so good to be able to just get in a car and let the music really get you to that level that you need to be at when or before you arrive. the bike ride just can't do that for me (yet). so at a rare moment this past weekend i was able to savor the beauty of operating a motor vehicle and letting the music (specifically this music) take me to that special level. i had the pleasure of sharing it with passengers who i believe were transported somewhere similar. so i'm passing the pleasure onto you.

i had a real perfect mix, but it wouldn't fit on a cd. so i cut some vital tracks but this is still absolutely killer. after fretting over the flow of this i realized it was much easier and still sounds great if the songs are just arranged in order. unfortunately a lot of the levels are fucked up, so some songs are waaay louder than others, i definitely lost some hearing listening to this on my headphones, not to say you shouldn't turn it up really loud. because that's really the only way to listen to this.

i've been blasting 96 a1 in my car lately, but my favorite tracks on this mix are 97 a5 and b1 - they go together so well and they are both just so fucking gansta. i love those really nasty beats where the only thing to do is turn it up, slow down and creep. sometimes i think another reason im in love with screw music is how well it goes down in cars, just cruising around, smoking (or not) and feeling the bass massage you through the pedals and back of the seat, looking in the rear view and seeing it vibrate.

The CD is called Bobby Booshay because he was the Waterboy in the movie of the same name and as a click, C.C.C. felt that they were underestimated by people and came up from the bottom like the waterboy did.

the new kid at work put some rap mixes on the shares and this song immediately caught my ear. the c/s version really obscures the lyrics, it's hard to make out the story told by the lyrics, in fact i'd say it's near impossible without hearing the original version. they read like a diary entry, intensely personal, terrifying but not lacking humor. i was obsessed with the song and the beat for a long time, until the kid uploaded scarface's updated version. then i was obsessed with it instead, i love the way scarface changes the feel of the song completely but keeping it recognizably 'my mind is playing tricks on me'. it's one of those songs that i can't turn up loud enough. talk about blasting bass. i love the explosions. this song contains another one of my favorite rhymes: "now i got it goin on and they sure hate me"

the second to last track on the second chopped and screwed mix given to me, i can't remember when, i never really listened to it. in fact, i never even made it past the middle of the first mix. BIG MISTAKE. ( i just had to restart the song (of course i'm listening while i write) and put on my headphones - it's just not the same unless it's bumping in my ears) one thing that really draws me to c/s music, it pounds in your blood unlike any other beat. this is one song in which the parts that are repeated are impeccable. when the first line of the chorus begins it's insane, then you get to hear it again, and again. just to drive the point home. i love the way rolling blunts is described in the lyrics. i used to sit in my room after i got home from school and before going to work, just listening to this song and another by h.a.w.k. and rolling a cigarillo. but i could never get the words right, it didn't bother me for a while, i got the gist of it. but eventually i had to find out, and i was intensely curious about what the song sounded like without being slowed. i was pretty floored after downloading z-ro vs the world. the song is SO different. i noticed the crazy little 80s tinking synthy melody and the minimal piano chords in the slowed version but they really changed the flavor of the song when i heard the album version. and obviously z-ro's delivery is so insane in the normal version, he's rapping so fast i still couldn't make out the words. another reason i love c/s: the song is no longer about the content, the lyrics are secondary to the beat, the way the chopping and screwing reorders the beat and the words and makes a new song (usually a better song) out of this already incredible song. this song also has one of my all-time favorite lyrics (you don't have to guess right?): "I'll admit Imma a fiend for nuthin but codiene and killa green"
